What is Candy?
Candy began as a 15-minute short play at Reboot: Shorts 2 (Bunker Theatre, 2018), being selected from over 1000 submissions. RTC immediately fell in love with the play and with ‘Will’, and found a deeply personal and moving connection with his story. Over the past 12 months, Michael Waller worked closely with Tim Fraser and Nico Pimparé on a unique journey to develop the story into this full-length play.
Candy’s debut production at the King’s Head Theatre on January 2020 coincided with the theatre’s 50th birthday.
The writer’s journey
CANDY started life as a ten-minute monologue in 2017, and for a long while I thought that’s all it’d ever be, at least on stage. I had been developing it into a short film script when Mike first performed the monologue at the Bunker Theatre in October 2018. It was with his and Nico’s encouragement that I saw that there was more story to explore, and that the character of Will had more to say. And as soon as I got Will talking again, I found I couldn’t get him to shut up!
